2005 Rachel Carson Award Honoree

Margaret Wittenberg is Vice President of Global Communications and Quality Standards at Whole Foods Market, the world's leading natural and organic foods supermarket chain.

An internationally recognized expert on sustainable agriculture with 30 years of experience in the natural and organic foods industry, Ms. Wittenberg joined Whole Foods Market in 1981. She focuses on quality, food safety, policy issues, and food and nutrition education, and was instrumental in the creation of the National Organic Standards, serving as the sole retail representative on the USDA's National Organic Standards Board.

A longtime champion for a higher standard of animal welfare in livestock production, she coordinates Whole Foods Market's farm animal quality standards, chairs the Animal Compassion Foundation, and currently serves on the board of the Global Animal Partnership. She is also a member of the Marine Stewardship Council Board of Trustees and a Board member of the Whole Planet Foundation.

In 2005, she was honored by the National Audubon Society with the Rachel Carson Award for her more than 30 years of work championing organic agriculture, sustainability and the environment. She has also authored several books on the topics of food and nutrition, her latest being New Good Food, published by Ten Speed Press in October 2007, and her New Good Food Shopper's Pocket Guide, published in April 2008.
